Quick Overview

Anger is an emotion we try to get rid of or to manage. That's because we usually get angry about things like not getting our way. But did you know Jesus got angry too? His anger was different, though. It was about something more significant than his wounded pride.

“God measures our commitment to him against our behavior, compassion, and generosity toward others.” – Andy Stanley

Scripture: 1 Timothy 6:17–18 — Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.

Be Rich 2016, Part 1: Angry God

INTRODUCTION
Anger is an emotion we try to get rid of or to manage. That’s because we usually get angry about things insubstantial things like not getting our way. But did you know Jesus got angry too? His anger was different, though. It was about something more significant than his wounded pride.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What is the last thing that made you angry? Was it worth getting angry over?

  2. Do you think most people would use the word “generous” to describe Christians? Why or why not?

  3. Give an example of how God has been generous with you through someone else. How did that experience influence the way you view your heavenly Father?

  4. Read 1 Timothy 6:17–18. How do these verses challenge our cultural assumptions about what it means to be rich?

  5. When have you been tempted to use the law of God to discount people made in the image of God? What would it look like to treat those people in a way that honors God?

  6. What are some obstacles to you giving as part of Be Rich? What would you have to do to overcome those obstacles? How can this group support you?

MOVING FORWARD
Jesus could not have been any clearer: God measures our commitment to him against our behavior, compassion, and generosity toward others. Extravagant generosity toward others is the appropriate response to God’s extravagant generosity toward us.Be Rich puts the fun in funding. It’s a game-changer for our nonprofit partners. It’s a life-changer for the people they serve. If you want to be a part of Be Rich, it’s not too late. Visit: berich.org/give
