Reframing Faith Around Jesus and the Wonder of His Love
Welcome to Wonderland, Part 1: Center of the World - Message by Andy Stanley
We wonder because our frames of reference don’t provide us with all of the answers. As your frame of reference changes or expands, some mysteries are solved. Some remain mysterious. So what do you do with the big mysteries in life—the mysteries that won’t resolve no matter how much you explore them? What do you do with your answered questions?
"Christians believe God sent someone to our side of the frame to serve as a reference." —Andy Stanley
When it comes to faith, if you wondered and then wandered, here’s something to ponder: perhaps your eyes were fixed on the wrong thing or person. What was the faith you lost fixed on and fastened to? Chances are it wasn’t Jesus. Remember: God showed up on our side of the frame to serve as your frame of reference.
"Christianity didn’t begin with an organization, it began with a person." —Andy Stanley
Scripture: Hebrews 12:1–3 — “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
Welcome to Wonderland, Part 2: Show and Tell - Message by Andy Stanley
We wonder because our frame of reference doesn’t provide us with all of the answers. Every version of religion works for children. But then life happens. We experience challenging circumstances that sow doubt in our childhood faith. Tragedy causes us to question if God is good and loving. Sin leads to guilt and shame. We wonder if God can really love us. Is there such a thing as a frame of reference that can accommodate a grown-up faith?
"God sent Jesus to our side of the frame to serve as a reference." —Andy Stanley
If you lost faith, what was that faith fixed on and fastened to? A church that dismissed science or mislabeled people? Religious rule keeping? A version of God that wouldn’t let bad things happen to good people? Don’t abandon faith because you once used the wrong frame of reference. Instead, fix your eyes on Jesus.
"God sent Jesus to stand with us so we wouldn't wonder where we stood with Him." —Andy Stanley
Scripture: John 14:7 — “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Welcome to Wonderland, Part 3: Faith - Message by Andy Stanley
We all wonder. When we fix our eyes somewhere other than on God, wonder leads to wander. If you’ve wandered from the faith or are looking for the door, it’s not because of Jesus. It’s probably because you’ve fixed your eyes on people, institutions, or a religion based on following rules. You may think Christianity requires mind-numbing, experience-denying faith, but what if that’s not true?
"God became one of us to clarify things for us." —Andy Stanley
If you wondered, then wandered, here’s something to ponder: there will always be things about faith that make you wonder, but God’s love for you shouldn’t be one of them. Two thousand years ago, light broke through the darkness in the town of Bethlehem. God communicated in no uncertain terms that he loves you. So, take your eyes off of the people, institutions, or legalism that caused you to lose faith and fix your eyes on Jesus. Fix your eyes on the wonder of his love.
"Faith is confidence God is and will do what He has promised to do." —Andy Stanley
Scripture: Hebrews 11:1 — “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” John 1:4–5 — “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
